Experience Vibrant Brixton & a Special Lunch

£35 members and non-members | 30 spaces

In the morning Diane will introduce you to Brixton on a guided walking tour, followed by a three course lunch (included in the ticket price). This tour is open to all ages, but Who London ticket holders will be introduced to one another at the beginning.

This vibrant area of London will surprise you – it’s not what you’re expecting! An elegant Edwardian Baroque Town Hall, one of London’s oldest cinemas, Georgian almshouses and a windmill all feature from the area’s past. There’s one of London’s liveliest markets selling an amazing variety of goods from wigs to fish and religious artefacts! Learn about the area’s past as a centre for music hall artistes and its recent regeneration as a centre for entertainment and food outlets. Discover the history of London’s African Caribbean community and some of that community’s leading “movers and shakers”. It’s all happening in Brixton!

At the end of the walk we enjoy one of London’s most unusual dining experiences. Try a delicious three course meal cooked with seasonal, fresh ingredients served and prepared by prisoners participating in the Clink Restaurant’s training scheme. The participants are working towards their City and Guilds NVQs in Hospitality and Customer Service. We dine in the Governor’s House which is the oldest part of this Georgian prison. The décor inside the restaurant is not at all institutional and the Prisoners are among the most polite and welcoming waiting staff Diane has ever encountered, so put your preconceptions about prisoners behind you and help to support the excellent Clink Charity which does so much to put ex- offenders on the road to a law abiding future.

Please be warned that HMP Brixton has extremely strict security rules. You must bring with you photo id in the form of a current passport, picture driving licence or Freedom Pass. As part of your visit you may be required to use a biometric system which includes your fingerprints and a photograph being taken. There may also be a sniffer dogs present. Biometric system and sniffer dogs are not always used on every occasion but you should be prepared for this. You will almost definitely be subject to routine searching (a pat down by a security officer of the same sex as yourself). Guests are only allowed to bring in one handbag or briefcase.

You may only bring into the restaurant a maximum of £50 in cash. Mobile phones are not allowed in the restaurant but you may leave this together with your bag in one of the lockers provided before entering. Drugs are prohibited but you may bring in medication that is prescribed to you. Other forbidden items are scissors, knives, and sharp objects plus chewing gum. When booking you must provide your date of birth.

This may sound scary but it isn’t! It is a life experience and worth it for the good food, chance to see the Governor’s House and opportunity to help the prisoners to follow a new, positive path through life on release. Diane has visited on several occasions and can talk you through the process if you are unsure of anything.

Walk meets at Brixton tube at 10.30am and ends at Brixton prison where buses outside will take you down to the tube station (or a 15 to 20 minute walk). We are booked in for lunch at 1.30pm and we should be finished by 3.30pm.

Your ticket includes your guided tour and a three course lunch (meat, fish and vegetarian choices) including coffee/tea and water. Menus change each month so a menu will be sent to you with your confirmation so that you can make your selections. You can purchase additional soft drinks at your own expense but alcohol is not allowed inside the prison.
