Chapels, Archways, Somerset House Courtyard & The Mall Galleries

£20 members, £25 non-members

Your ticket includes a guided tour by Diane, our Blue Badge Guide, and a gallery tour. The payment we make to the gallery goes towards their educational charity work.

This tour is open to all ages, but event attendees tend to be 50+. Diane will introduce you to Who Londoners at the beginning of the tour.

In the morning Diane will lead a walk to discover some secrets behind the Strand. The Strand is one of London’s main thoroughfares but this tour looks at some of the buildings and secret places behind this famous street.

Two little known chapels, a hidden archway which inspired Dickens, a 17th century watergate and a “ghost station” are just some of the places we’ll visit on this tour.

We’ll also walk through the elegant courtyard of Somerset House following in the footsteps of royals, sailors, artists, musicians, actors and skaters.

After a break for lunch in the Trafalgar Square area we head for the Mall Galleries where gallery staff will give us a tour of the Royal Institute of Watercolours’ Annual Exhibition. Founded in 1831 to exhibit the best watercolours, The Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours for many years made their home in Piccadilly. When their lease expired in the 1970s they joined with several other leading art societies in the Federation of British Artists based at the Mall Galleries.

The galleries are situated in the terraces overlooking St. James’s Park, designed by John Nash and built as private dwellings in 1827-32. The gallery and offices are leased from the Crown Estate by the Federation of British Artists.

***Meet at 11am outside Temple Tube Station. The tour finishes in the Mall Galleries near to Charing Cross Station at approximately 3.45pm.***
